CECOAL is a research institution affiliated with the Argentinean National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET). CECOAL, has an annual turnover of 1.3 million Euro, employs 12 full-time researchers, 8 research officers, 7 technicians, 8 support staff and currently has 11 research fellows and PhD students. The centre is devoted to researching environmental and ecological systems of the Paraná-Plata River basin that has led to over 400 publications. CECOAL’s research covers a broad range of topics including, wetland ecology, sediment dynamics, fluvial system dynamics, flora and fauna dynamics, palaeoecology, palaeoclimate, palaeofauna, environmental impact assessment, ecological population dynamics, biodiversity and disturbance, water quality, macroinvertebrates, fish habitat and plankton dynamics. This research is widely used in decision making and environmental regulations enforced by governmental and public bodies, resulting in a Full Commendation by the Argentine National Congress in 2004.
