Professor Jim Best

Professor Jim Best was appointed to the Threet Chair in Sedimentary Geology and Professor of Geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2006. Best's research involves investigating the fundamental relationships between fluid flow, sediment transport and the development of bed morphology. He has pioneered the development and application of innovative methodologies, particularly laboratory techniques (e.g. phase and laser Doppler anemometry, ultrasonic Doppler velocity profiling, two-phase and micro- PIV) and instrumentation that can be used in large rivers (e.g. ADCP, GPR and MBES). He was Editor of the flagship journal Sedimentology from 1998-2002.
